From the New York Times:
Paterson thinks, along with some of the most befuddled group of politicians ever, that passing laws allowing same sex marriage is a civil rights issue. Most people in the US, and the 30 states which have passed marriage definition laws, see the issue as a blatant attempt to neuter marriage and weaken the family.Gov. David A. Paterson on Thursday will announce plans to introduce legislation to legalize same-sex marriage, according to people with knowledge of the governor’s plans.
Mr. Paterson’s move, which he first signaled last week after Vermont became the fourth state to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed, reflects the governor’s desire to press the issue with lawmakers in Albany as other states move ahead with efforts to grant more civil rights to homosexuals.
Governor Paterson will propose the legislation, even though he realizes that the New York legislature currently will not pass such legislation. Apparently the New York legislators still represent the people of New York.
