Tortilla Flats Spider ©2010 Euripides

Despite beliefs to the contrary, I do have a life besides teaching history and political science or snarking against leftists, same sex marriage advocates, our educational system, or whatever else strikes my fancy. (Having your fancy struck, by the way, is quite painful and sometimes requires extensive rehab.)

Among my other pastimes and careers, I enjoy making photographs.

With your kind indulgence, I'd like to post some of my photos from time to time with short annotations of techniques and insights. If photography isn't your thing, then please visit my site when I dish out my usual snark.

So without further ado...

I found this little guy hovering above a lone pool of water near Tortilla Flats, Arizona. The spider naturally stayed still for portraits, as long as I didn't get my shadow in the way. This was taken near sunset, but the color of the sunlight hadn't warmed up enough to show off the the spider's spectacular color or the color of the water. I bumped up the colors a bit in Photoshop and cropped the image to include the important parts. The reflection completes the image.
