F.A. Hayek - I recommend two of his books, The Road to Serfdom, where he outlines the follies of socialism which led the the abuses of the Soviet Union and to Nazi Germany, and The Fatal Conceit, where he gives his argument in favor of a free market economy.
I've admired F.A. Hayek and his ability to build a solid argument against the follies of socialism, especially against the democratic form of socialism plaguing the US and Europe. While I had discovered many of the truths of classical liberalism for myself, it's still nice to find that there are others who have seen the dangers of socialism and took the time to refute the arguments of socialism.
Here's a gem from Hayek which expresses well the problems with social engineering by legal fiat:
I am certain nothing has done so much to destroy the juridical safeguards of individual freedom as the striving after the mirage of social justice. - F.A. Hayek
